To Start:
Scout must start at Pink level for the first meeting or scout event. All new scouts are taught the Square knot and start with the Pink rope. The scout wears Pink until he can demonstrate the ability to tie the knots of the second level and son for each level; however, he can only advance one level per meeting or scout event. To challenge:
A scout can be challenged by another scout, at the same level or above, to tie each knot required at his level. He only gets two attempts. If the scout fails to tie a knot that is required at his current level, he drops back to Pink and has to start over again. The same rules for advancing apply when starting over. He must wear the Pink rope at the next meeting attended and work back up one meeting at a time.Judging and Advancement:
Scouts or adults who hold Purple or Black are qualified as Judge. Once a scout or adult achieves the Purple or Black level, he is exempt from challenge. To advance, a scout must demonstrate all knots required from Level 1 to the level being attempted. Purple is obtained by earning the Pioneering merit badge and demonstrating 5 additional knots from the MB book. Adults must demonstrate 5 additional knots from the Pioneering merit badge book. Black is obtained by demonstrating the listed rescue knots. The rub:
The challenging scout must be able to tie the knots that are being challenged. After the challenged scout completes his knots, the challenging scout can be asked to tie the knots also. If the challenging scout fails, he goes immediately to the pink rope and must start over again regardless of what the challenged scout does. If the challenging scout has failed, the challenged scout is given amnesty, if necessary, until the next meeting, e.g., he suffers no penalty at this time and is given a second chance to pass at the next meeting. Scouts, who lose their rope, also must start from the beginning.Forgetful Scouts:
Those who forget their rope must wear a Pink rope, from the troop supply at that meeting or event. How to wear that pretty new rope:
Pink and Yellow ropes will be wrapped around the waist and tied with a square knot. White, Blue, Purple and Black may be coiled and clipped to a carabineer on a belt loop if desired.Bylaws:
The rules or changes can only be made with the approval of a majority of the Patrol Leaders Council.
